Join this 8-day Arctic adventure under the midnight sun on Senja - one of the most amazing islands of Norway. Highlights of the trip include mountain hikes to the most spectacular views the island has to offer and trips to the more easily accessible popular locations, to photograph the stunning landscapes with the magical midnight sun. The mountains of Senja are unique and give you the feeling of being in a fairy-tale, with dramatic landscapes and idyllic small fishing villages. The tour guide and workshop leader is the local photographer Frøydis Dalheim. She is a very talented photographer and well known in Senja. She will make sure that you will always be in the best photo spots at the right time and assist you in getting the shots of your dreams.

Senja during midsummer

Senja is the second largest island of Norway and for many landscape photographers a still undiscovered treasure. The island is located about 100 km north of Lofoten. The total area at Senja is smaller than Lofoten, but there are almost as many fantastic photo opportunities. Due to its northern position, the island is perfect for photographing during the midnight sun. This in combination with the impressive fjords, dramatic steep mountains that rise straight out of the sea, makes this island a paradise for landscape photography. During the midsummer, the sun doesn't set. It will dip all the way down to the horizon and stay there for several hours. This gives hours of beautiful colorful light to photograph with. An absolute dream for any landscape photographer.

Tour description

This is an active photo tour for the photographer who likes to go the extra mile in order to get those special images. During this workshop the main focus lays on photographing the magical midnight sun and exploring the best locations on Senja (of course with a view to the midnight sun). The absolute best and most spectacular views are found high up in the mountains. In order to get there, we have to do some mountain hiking. We will hike up the most amazing mountains such as Hesten with views to the spectacular mountain Segla, and the mountains Husfjellet, Barden and Grytetippen. We will also visit the most popular and easy accessible places down by the fjord such as Tungeneset, Ersfjorden, Hamn and Husøya. All these places have great views to the north and they’re all perfect spots for photographing the stunning landscapes with the midnight sun. This landscape is incredibly beautiful and distinctive. It will provide great conditions and photo possibilities even when it is cloudy and the sun is not visible.

Most of the shooting takes place around midnight, which provides the best conditions for the light from the midnight sun. We will also visit cozy fishing villages and other sights during daytime such as Fjordgård, Skaland and the restored fishing village Kråkeslottet and Gryllefjord.

We will follow the weather conditions closely, and the day program will be set accordingly. You will receive more information regarding the expected weather conditions a week prior the workshop.

Additionally to the photo shoots, there will be the opportunity for photo discussion and help with editing in LR and PS.

Accommodation

We will stay in comfortable apartments at Mefjord Brygge in Mefjorden. A perfect location close to the best photo locations at Senja. They have an outstanding restaurant close to the apartments, where we can enjoy our meals.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner schedule

Breakfast will be available from 08:00 to 10.00 in the local restaurant.

Lunch packages have to be made by ourselves during breakfast.

Dinners will be available from 18:00 to 20:00 in the local restaurant. The diners consist out of two courses and will change from day to day. The quality of the food served in the restaurant is very good. Most products are fresh and local.

Itinerary

  • Day 1. You will fly to Bardufoss airport. In order to get there, you have to change flights in Oslo Gardermoen airport. At Bardufoss airport you will be picked up by the guide Frøydis Dalheim, who will drive the group in a mini bus to the accommodation at Senja. This ride takes about 2 hours. After dropping the luggage at the apartments we’ill have dinner in the restaurant where Frøydis will give an introduction for the coming week. After dinner we will go out for the first photo shoot of the trip. We will visit the famous Tungeneset with view to Okshornan.

  • Day 2-7. Depending on the weather, we set up a program according to the conditions. We make up to 3-4 mountain hikes during the week. Although this is a medium demanding mountain this will require that you’re used to walking in the mountains and required a certain degree of fitness. The number of mountain hikes will depend on the group and their wishes. When we’re not at the mountains we take pictures of the midnight sun in more easily accessible places with short distance from the car. Since we will spend a lot of the night outside will need to sleep in the morning and there will be no organized photo in the first part of the day. We still have plenty of time visiting sights and nice photo spots during the day, before photographing the midnight sun at midnight.

  • Day 8. We pack our bags and leave to the airport after breakfast. You will fly back from Bardufoss airport.

Photo equipment
For the landscapes you can use a large variety of lenses. The best would be if you could cover the range from 16mm up to 200mm. For example, a 16-35mm, 24-70mm and a 70-200mm. If you will bring a 100-400mm or similar, this can replace the 70-200mm. If you don't have a full frame camera but a crop camera, try to cover the range from 10mm up to 150mm. Other things you should bring, are:

  • Plenty of memory cards

  • Plenty of batteries

  • Battery charger

  • Tripod (please bring a sturdy one!)

  • Filters (ND, gradient and polarizer) (please let us know if you need filters)

  • Laptop, external harddrive or image tank to back up your images

  • Laptop if you want to edit images

  • Comfortable camera backpack

Clothing

Even though it’s summer, it can be cold in northern Norway, especially in the mountains at night, the temperature can drop to 6-7 degrees. We can also be lucky and experience warm days with temperatures around 20 degrees. So make sure to bring clothes for all conditions. For the hikes up the mountains you need sturdy mountain shoes which support your ankles.

List of clothing:

  • Thin gloves for photographing

  • Warm hat

  • Scarf

  • Warm thick (woolen) sweater

  • Rain clothing

  • Windproof jacket and pants

  • Waterproof mountain shoes

  • Sunglasses
