INTERN or VOLUNTEER

Period.

15th of March – 10th of May 2022 (with the possibility to extend until mid July)

 

General summery.

You will work closely together with Floris Smeets, the owner of Photo Tours Norway, professional nature photographer, Sony Ambassador and guide. You will help to prepare and guide photo tours / workshops. You will do a lot of the work together. After some time you will be expected to do some jobs by yourself. Additionally to the photo tours, you will be helping with a camera trapping project. The work during the entire period will in particular consist of the following tasks:

  • Helping with packing / unpacking outdoor equipment for the tours

  • Helping setting up and taking down tents (expedition tents and photo hides)

  • Moving photo hides on the grouse leks

  • Placing, moving and checking camera traps (on the capercaillie leks and for a photo project)

  • Picking up and drop off customers at Oslo airport

  • Bringing customers to the grouse leks and pick them up again

  • Drive customers around to photograph moose and owls

  • Maintenance of bird feeders

  • Helping with household chores during the tours (shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc.)

  • Spending nights on the grouse leks to monitor the activity of the birds and find the best places for the photo hides

Tours / Workshops that take place during the internship period:

  • 1x 5 days Musk-oxen in winter conditions photo tour in Dovrefjell

  • 1x 4 day and 3x 7 day black grouse and capercaillie photo tours 

  • 9 days guiding a professional filming crew for filming black grouse and landscapes 

 

Ideal candidate:

  • Nature and wildlife interested

  • Social skilled and interested in guiding

  • Good physical condition

  • Speaks well English and preferably another language 

  • Interest and knowledge in nature photography (not required)

  • Between 21 and 30 year old (only required for intern)

  • Currently following an education on bachelor or master level (only required for intern)

  • You must have at least two years of driving experience

  • You must have your own car 

  • Not allergic for dogs

 

What will you gain out of it?

  • This internship / working experience will give you first-hand experience in nature (photography) guiding

  • It is a great way to learn how it is, and what it takes to work in this branch

  • You will have the opportunity to work closely with a professional nature photographer

  • You will learn a lot about northern ecosystems

  • You will get to see a lot of wildlife

  • You get to stay for two months in the most beautiful nature of Norway  

 

Compensation.

  • Housing. During the tours you will stay in the same accommodation as the rest of the group. In between the tours you are welcome to stay in the guest room at Floris's house. 

  • During the tours your breakfast, lunch and diners are provided. In between the tours you will be responsible for your food.

  • All costs made for transport connected to the tours and checking / placing camera traps,  (fuel and toll)

  • You can occasionally use the black grouse and capercaillie hides free of charge.

The possible extension can last until about mid-July. During this additional period, the focus is mainly on the great grey owl. The work will consist of finding the owls, guiding photographers to the owls and photographing / filming the owls.
